Club History and Information

GFWC Headquarters

Our national headquarters are located in Washington, DC, which houses the administrative offices, the National Women's History and Resource Center and is the residence of our international president during her two year term as president.

GFWC History

GFWC and FFWC have rich histories spanning more than 100 years. In 1868, Jenny June Croly, an accomplished New York newspaperwoman, was denied admittance to a banquet honoring Charles Dickens at the all-male New York Press Club, simply because she was a woman. Outraged, she was determined to organize a club for women. The General Federation was founded in 1890, with the motto of "Unity in Diversity."

This group of women has grown into the largest organization of volunteer women in the world with more than ten million members worldwide in 30 countries.

FFWC Headquarters

In addition to GFWC international membership you will also be a member of our state federation, GFWC Florida Federation of Women's Clubs (FFWC). Our state headquarters are located in Lakeland, Florida. The President of the FFWC and the Executive Committee members oversee the operation of our state federation. Our state membership is approximately 20,000.

FFWC History

FFWC celebrated its centennial in 1995, having been organized in 1895 in Green Cove Springs, Florida. FFWC was one of the first organizations to become involved in the preservation of the Everglades and to help establish Royal Palm State Park. In 1972, the Florida Federation built the first home at Hacienda Girls Ranch in Melbourne. The ranch currently is home to up to 35 girls in three houses and has a large group meeting and learning facility. Hacienda Girls Ranch is the only continuing project of FFWC.
